The imaginative use of space, both within and outside the school, should be considered with flexibility in mind. "The physical environment is integral to the teaching and learning process because it governs much of the teaching that happens within it" (Parsons & Beauchamp, 2012, p. 180). A learning space establishes an overall atmosphere for learning (Tomlinson, 2002) and whether intentional or not, "the form, functionality, and finish of a space reflect the culture, behaviours and priorities of the people within it" (Doorley & Witthoft, 2012). Considering Universal Design, the physical space allows for learners to move around and shift as varying tasks change over the day. This learning space supports CAST'S (2014) three principles of Universal Design for Learning:
